Making Thunderstorms
Picture
Explore the relationship between sea surface temperatures (SST) and hurricane strength.
Can you adjust the atmosphere to make a thunderstorm?  Thunderstorms can only happen under certain conditions. What do temperature and humidity need to be like up high and near to the ground to make a storm?
Students: determine where the hurricanes will form best by:
  • Drag the hurricane around to see the effect surface temperature has on the hurricane.
  • Drag the grey high pressure area around to see how pressure and winds influence hurricane paths.
  • Click the season name to rotate through seasons. Ocean temperatures change with each season.
Students: determine which settings creates the largest thunderstorm. Remember to record your answer(s).
