Create Your Own Solar System
Use the virtual lab to create your own solar system and begin observing how the laws of physics work and how planets interact.
Picture
Make a Solar System
Planetary Formation
Planets are formed around a new star by condensing in a disc of molecular gas and dust, embedded within a larger molecular cloud. Condensation increases until they become giant planets, which are heated, then cleanse their orbits in the disc and possibly bend it. Remaining gas in the disc finally disappears, leaving planets, a disc of dust and debris.

Solar System

View the motion of the planets in this activity. Solar System Scope is a model of Solar System, Night sky and Outer Space in real time, with accurate positions of objects and lots of interesting facts.

Summer Activity III
Cosmic Eye

Cosmic Eye is a short film developed by astrophysicist Danail Obreschkow. It shows the largest and smallest well known scales of the universe by gradually zooming out from a specific location.

Summer Activity IV
Scale of the Universe

If you have ever wondered where we fit in the universe, then this interactive is for you. The Scale of the Universe takes you on a ride down to the smallest thing theorized by scientists and then out to the vastness of the universe.
Picture
Activity 1:  Describe what objects/creatures/items you will see at:
a. 1 x 10 -1.8     b. 1 x 10 -19.5      c. 1 x 10 2.8
d. 1 x 10 -4.6     e. Select 3 of your own

Activity 2:  Provide the names of the following numbers:
a. 1 x 10 -6       b. 1 x 10 -24       c. 1 x 10 21
d. 1 x 10 -12      e. Select 3 of your own

Planetary Nebula...
The Birthplace of Stars
Low-mass stars turn into planetary nebulae towards the end of their red giant phase. At that point the star becomes highly unstable and starts to pulsate. The outer layers are ejected by the resulting stellar winds. Planetary nebula are relatively short-lived, and last just a few tens of thousands of years.
How Does Gravity Help Form a Solar System?
PictureSpace-Time Virtual Lab
Use the virtual lab to create objects in space and begin creating your universe/solar system. Be careful, gravity is everywhere!

Where is the JWST?

The James Webb Space Telescope is the world's premier space science observatory. Use this virtual lab to observe its motion and find out where the James Webb Space Telescope is in our solar system.

Women in Technology and Engineering
Picture
Women make up more than 51% of the population but less than 15% of the engineers. The lack of women in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields threatens to reduce the diversity of talent that is necessary for the 21st century. Check out and learn more about these important women of science (Thanks Charlotte).

Severe Weather - Making Thunderstorms
Picture
Can you help Theo and Bill figure out where these hurricanes will make landfall? Using data from the GOES-16 satellite (previously known as GOES-R) and considering wind vectors, estimate where the hurricane will hit. Hurricanes keep coming, and they're all different, so you have to stay sharp!
Can you adjust the atmosphere to make a thunderstorm?  Thunderstorms can only happen under certain conditions. What do temperature and humidity need to be like up high and near to the ground to make a storm?
Students: determine where the hurricane will hit as soon as possible. The faster you guess, the higher your score. But guess wrong and you will lose points, so you need to be sure!
Students: determine which settings creates the largest thunderstorm. Remember to record your answer(s).
